Copper coins raise more than £450 for PPH Breast Cancer Unit

Every Penny Counts!

A group of Year 9 pupils from Coedcae School decided to collect copper coins as a way of raising money for the Breast Care Unit in Llanelli’s Prince Phillip Hospital. Over a period of two years, pupils from 9AR brought in bags of 1p and 2p coins, which soon began to mount up. In the end, buckets had to be used to store the coins, before the task of counting them and taking them to the bank could begin.

By ‘looking after the pennies’, the pupils were rewarded with a tremendous total of £455.40. Morgan Owen, Leah Shaw and Lloyd Weston from 9AR, accompanied their teacher, Ms Alex Roe, to the Breast Care Unit to present Mr Holt with their cheque.

Mr Holt who is the Consultant Surgeon, was extremely grateful for the cheque which he said will be used to either buy equipment for the Unit or to fund the costs of travel to the Unit for patients. Mr Holt took time to explain the research work of the Unit and pupils left inspired, and determined to continue with their fundraising for the Unit.
